Main movements of the textile industry in Colombia

Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify the main trends in the Colombian textile industry. To this end, online sources were consulted regarding the largest representatives of the textile sector in the country, with companies in Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali standing out as the leading exporters and exhibiting significant economic activity both domestically and internationally. To date, there is ample data on the role of the textile industry in Colombia within the national and international markets. Most of the information suggests that the low competitiveness in this sector stems from a lack of government support and guarantees, in addition to trade agreements that hinder fair competition among businesses operating in this sector. However, the knowledge and experience of the country's largest textile companies have allowed them to continue textile production and, in some cases, even compete internationally and with imported goods. Currently, the textile industry faces a significant competitive challenge due to the implementation of free trade agreements with global powers such as the United States and China, countries with extensive experience and expertise in the textile sector. This has put Colombian textile industries at risk. Therefore, this research examines the main trends in the Colombian textile industry, its strengths and weaknesses in the face of potential economic threats, to assess the current state of these companies and their ability to confront these recent economic challenges.
