The destruction of the Colombian páramos and its environmental impact

Abstract

The looming disappearance of Colombia's páramos (high-altitude Andean ecosystems) has become increasingly apparent in recent times. The ongoing destruction of these ecosystems is alarming, as they are already struggling and adrift, despite representing vital water resources for many regions. It is crucial for Colombia to protect its páramos. Raising awareness among visitors and those who explore them ecologically is essential, as they capture these ecosystems on film to document their existence and provide valuable historical evidence. This documentation will serve as a reference point and be instrumental in halting their destruction. This project highlights the destruction of the páramos and its environmental impact in Colombia by conducting research on these ecosystems. The project aims to determine their current state through interviews and individual analyses. It was determined that few government entities are responsible for the control and care of Colombia's páramos (high-altitude Andean ecosystems), and very little support is provided to the communities where these water sources originate. The gradual destruction of these ecosystems is largely due to these communities and to large corporations seeking to exploit natural resources without considering the environmental consequences. The destruction of Colombia's páramos is a serious problem for the Colombian community as a whole, not just for those living nearby. The government grants licenses regardless of whether these areas are protected reserves, and the ambition to generate income disregards the resulting damage.
