From Criminal to Icon: The Evolution of Pablo Escobar's Legacy in Public Spaces and Media

Abstract

This study analyzes how the image of Pablo Escobar has been portrayed in popular culture and the media, and how this representation has influenced the way people remember Colombia’s history. In movies, TV shows, and books, the Medellín Cartel leader, who committed many heinous acts, is depicted in a confusing manner. Shows like Narcos have made him seem more interesting and understandable, which has led people to debate how much we should admire his criminal past. The pain of his victims has been overshadowed by narcotourism in Medellín and the commercialization of his image, highlighting the most shocking moments of his life, though certain groups saw this as beneficial.
