Racism: a persistent shadow across eras and borders

Abstract

This review article discusses how racism has changed and evolved over time, crossing borders and adapting to each era. It is not limited to a problem of the past, but also exists today, only with different faces and forms. Here we look at colonization, the civil rights movement, to the digital age, and look at each to see how racist ideas persisted and mutated over time. Even with legislation, socio-politically marked, the study suggests that racism persists, but today as part of various systemic structures spread across digital spaces. To this can be added, masked by the modernist context, the ease of access to the internet. In short, to combat today's racism, it is essential to take up the challenge of unearthing its deep-seated anchors and the pawns of a "scar of time" that still impacts life in society. To eradicate it, a constant effort is needed around the world on validation of social justice, awareness of history, and a real commitment to equity. This is one of the main points I argue in this paper, trying to make visible as much as possible how racism continues to define the world, we live in.
