Reflections on dark tourism in Chernobyl, Ukraine: Morbid curiosity or historical interest?

Abstract

Human beings are curious by nature, which is why dark tourism is so enigmatic to us. We struggle to understand many aspects of this type of tourism, and this has fueled our growing intrigue with the dark. The main mystery for some is the true reason behind this type of tourism—what motivates them to practice it. One could say there are two reasons: morbid curiosity or historical interest. In this reflective article, we will discuss Chernobyl, a place marked in history as the site of the worst nuclear disaster, a place where radiation risks persist, yet it remains a popular destination for dark tourism. Each reader, based on the arguments presented here, will be able to identify the reason why we visit this destination. Since the world is such a large place, we cannot generalize and interpret people's emotions in the same way. Nothing is affirmed or denied completely; the aim is simply to expand the readers' knowledge so they can create a foundation and answer the question: morbid curiosity or historical interest?
