Abstract

Introduction. The recognition of edaphic characteristics has an important connotation in livestock farming since tropical production systems are based on grazing, making the bioavailability of nutrients in the soil the first necessity for obtaining products such as weight gain or production of milk. The objective of the present investigation is the characterization of the soils used in livestock in the Norte de Santander department. Methodology. 210 farms dedicated to livestock with an age of more than 5 years were selected, located in 6 municipalities located in the warm, temperate and high zone of the Norte de Santander department. The physical and chemical properties of the soils of the experimental units were evaluated, such as apparent density (g / cc), texture to the touch, volumetric humidity (%) pH, cationic exchange capacity (CIC), major elements nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), organic matter, interchangeable bases Ca, Mg, K and ratio of interchangeable bases. Results and Discussion. Conclusions. This study is a pioneer for the characterization of soils in livestock in the Norte de Santander department, as a strategy for technification and recognition of deficiencies and potential.
