Sustainability, business durability and failure of services: an approach to the closure of companies in the tourism sector

Abstract

The concept of sustainable tourism presents various challenges for its implementation in business practice. From its specificity and excess of generality to the lack of integration between the variables contained in the different conceptualizations by dimensions and indicators, the concept of sustainable tourism can end up providing a mechanical framework for the interpretation of the phenomena that occur in the sector, such as the closure of companies and the failure of services. The study used a mixed design based on an emergent and concurrent strategy. Triangulation of sources, researchers, perspectives, and methods were used as methodological resources to ensure reliability. The main results achieved suggest the need to generate explanatory models as well as comprehensive ones. The linearity and mechanism in the interpretations of the phenomena in studies marks the way in which they are perceived, which depends on the disciplinary lens. In addition, the results suggest that the closure of companies, as a complex phenomenon, must be addressed from integrating positions.
