Entrepreneurship Capacity of Distance Education Students at the Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander During the Second Semester 2022

Abstract

The growing unemployment in regions such as Norte de Santander highlights the need to strengthen entrepreneurial competencies in higher education, particularly in modalities such as distance education, which aims to expand access in vulnerable contexts. Within this framework, the present study aimed to determine the entrepreneurial profile of students enrolled in Distance Education programs at the Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander during the second semester of 2022. A quantitative approach was adopted, using a non-experimental, cross-sectional design, and applying a sociodemographic questionnaire along with an entrepreneurial profile test to a random sample of 451 students drawn from a total population of 766, through Google Forms. Similarly, data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25, employing both univariate and bivariate techniques. The results revealed a significant development of entrepreneurial capacity among the students, with high scores in dimensions such as achievement motivation, internal locus of control, and self-efficacy, although weaknesses were identified in stress management and risk-taking. Moreover, differences were observed across academic programs, with students from the Commercial and Financial Technology and the Bachelor’s in Community Education programs demonstrating stronger competencies in entrepreneurial profile components. It is concluded that, although there are notable individual strengths, it is necessary to reinforce the entrepreneurial component within academic programs through training strategies that integrate soft skills, innovation, leadership, and resilience, in order to enhance employability and promote the creation of sustainable job opportunities in the region. Therefore, this type of training is essential for distance education students not only to access the labor market but also to become agents of transformation within their communities.
